25 Unexpected Animal Friends to Restore Your Faith in the Power of Friendship (October 16, 2026)

As a kid, Halloween was a perfect day. I'd spend weeks trying to create an elaborate costume to go to school, while trying to convince my parents that I was indeed going to use it more than once (which I never did).

Back then, I actually wanted to go to school. I got up earlier than usual, got ready, and had a couple of second thoughts when I had to walk down the street dressed like a fairy ballerina. Then, I would see another kid wearing a silly costume and all my doubt would float away, replaced by pure excitement.

Getting on the school bus was like entering an alternate universe, filled with colors and surprises on every corner. Good mood, laughter, and wonder. Music was usually playing, and everyone was more cheerful than usual. Not a notebook in sight, by the way.

No classes that day, just one big celebration. As soon as I got to school, every teacher and school worker I encountered would give me sweets. I used to take my camera with me, and everyone was eager to have their picture taken. There was a big parade in the afternoon and some fun activities later. English teachers of every grade would put their heads together (and their pockets) to come up with a short Halloween movie marathon and an unexpected pizza party.

Then, every kid's favorite part. Trick or treating. Yes, I enjoyed the bags of candy resulting from the door-to-door visits; who didn't? But there was one thing in particular that I enjoyed most: every year I would go trick-or-treating with my friends. To this day, we still get together on Halloween and celebrate. We don't celebrate the season, the costumes, or the fantastic movie marathons. We celebrate our friendship. Because how lucky are we that we still get to enjoy together after so many years? Truly, no matter the season, that is the real gift.

That said, give a call to your friends. Make a joke in the group chat. Tell them something cool about your day and remind them how special they are to you. Share this wholesome collection of unexpected animal friendships with them because, let's face it, the most lasting friendships are always the ones we least expect. Let them know that you'll always be up for celebrating with them, Halloween or not.

As a kid, friendships were very simple. You noticed someone who looked interesting, went up to them, and asked directly if they wanted to be friends with you. Like a lot of things, friendships were easy back then. As the years passed, those friends stood by you as you grew, and you got to see them transform into better versions of themselves. Even little me appreciated how lucky it is to find people who get you and are there for you always. Now, I think back to the day we met, and I thank my past self for being smart enough, and brave enough, to come up to them in the first place. Little did I know they were going to become my family.

Additionally, this collection is also meant to honor the friends we lost along the way. The ones that moved away, and the ones that simply grew apart. However long a friendship is, it is always worth it. The lesson here is quite straightforward: if there is something you can count on, it is that friends come from the most unexpected places and make the most unexpected changes in your life. And thank goodness they do. So, thank you, friends, for making me the person I am today, and standing beside me when I least deserved it. Here’s to all the friends out there, close or far, past or present, so we can continue to celebrate them every chance we get.
